How to get an Abu Dhabi driving licence: steps and fees

In Abu Dhabi, driving licences are issued through Abu Dhabi Police, with most steps on the government services platform TAMM. You train at a registered driving centre and pass the traffic department's tests.

The steps

  1. Eye test at an approved centre.
  2. Open a traffic file on TAMM (sign in with UAE PASS) or at a service centre, with your passport copy, Emirates ID copy, two photographs and the eye test report. The file lets you attend theory and practical training.
  3. Train at a registered driving centre: theory lessons, then practical lessons.
  4. Book and pass the theory test and the driving tests set by the traffic department.
  5. Issue your licence on TAMM.

Fees on TAMM (checked October 2026)

  • Open a traffic file: AED 200.
  • Book a driving test (light vehicle or motorcycle): AED 100.
  • New driving licence: AED 300 from 21, AED 100 under 21.
  • Driving centre training is priced by the centre and is the largest cost.

Age

Since 29 March 2025 (Federal Decree-Law 14 of 2024) the UAE minimum age for a light vehicle licence is 17. Some older government service pages still say 18, so your driving centre will confirm the exact step at which your licence can be issued.

Preparing for the theory test

The theory test covers UAE road signs, rules of the road, traffic offences and black points. Abu Dhabi Police does not publish the number of questions, so ask your driving centre. PassDriveTest's Abu Dhabi practice tests use a 35-question practice format. Take a free Abu Dhabi mock test.
