In Sharjah you get a licence through Sharjah Police, training at a driving institute such as the Sharjah Driving Institute (SDI). Here are the steps and what they cost.
The steps
- Eye test at an approved centre.
- Open a traffic file at a registered driving centre with a passport copy, Emirates ID copy, two photographs, the eye test report and, if required, a no-objection letter from your sponsor.
- Theory lectures and theory test.
- Practical training, then the road test.
- Collect your licence from the traffic authority.
Your traffic file is valid for 6 months: it renews automatically while you keep training, and is cancelled if you take no action for 6 months.
Fees at Sharjah Driving Institute
- Eye test: AED 100
- Open traffic file: AED 200
- Lectures and theory test: AED 850, plus AED 50 for each failed attempt
- Final road examination: AED 300
- Practical lessons are priced by package. Check current prices with the institute before you pay.
Before the road test
Pay all fees, pass all earlier training and tests, keep your traffic file valid and bring your original Emirates ID.
Age
Since 29 March 2025 (Federal Decree-Law 14 of 2024) the UAE minimum age for a light vehicle licence is 17. Some older government service pages still say 18, so Sharjah Police or your institute will confirm the exact step at which your licence can be issued.
Preparing for the theory test
The theory test covers UAE road signs, rules, traffic offences and black points. The format is not published, so ask your institute. PassDriveTest's Sharjah practice tests use a 35-question practice format. Take a free Sharjah mock test.
