In the ACT you get your learner licence by completing a pre-learner licence course and passing the ACT Road Rules test, run by Access Canberra.
The test
- Based on the ACT Road Rules Handbook.
- A pass is valid for 2 years.
- Access Canberra does not publish a fixed question count online; the free ACT mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions with 24 needed (80%) as a practice format.
A study plan that works
- Read the ACT Road Rules Handbook (free from Access Canberra).
- Learn the signs on the ACT road signs tab, including school zone signs that switch on and off.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Learner licence rules
- From 15 years and 9 months. The learner licence is valid for 5 years.
- L plates front and rear, zero BAC, and towing only up to 750 kg.
- Under 25: hold the licence at least 12 months (6 months if you got it at 25 or older).
- Log 100 hours, 10 at night (under 25). Each hour with an accredited instructor counts as 3 (up to 10 instructor hours), and the Safer Driving Course is worth 20 hours.
- After 3 months, do the online Hazard Perception Test (first attempt free).
- Provisional licence from 17, by a government test or Competency Based Training and Assessment.
