In the Northern Territory you get a learner licence by passing the theory test at a Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) office, based on the NT Road Users' Handbook.
The test
- Questions on NT road rules, signs and safe driving from the Road Users' Handbook.
- The MVR does not publish a fixed question count online; the free NT mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions with 24 needed (80%) as a practice format.
- If your learner licence nears expiry before you are ready for the driving test, re-sit the theory test to renew it for another two years.
A study plan that works
- Read the Road Users' Handbook (free on nt.gov.au).
- Learn the signs on the NT road signs tab, including open speed limits on some highways.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Learner licence rules
- Maximum 80 km/h, or any lower posted limit.
- Your supervisor sits in the front seat, holds a full Australian licence and carries it.
- Zero BAC and no phone use at all, including hands-free.
- Hold the learner licence at least six consecutive months before the practical test. There is no minimum number of logged hours, but 50 or more cuts the crash risk on your Ps by about a third.
- DriveSafe NT gives subsidies and support toward your learner and provisional licence.
Take a free NT mock test to see where you stand.
