To get a Queensland learner licence you pass the road rules knowledge test, either through PrepL (online learning and assessment) or the written road rules test. The pass mark is high: 27 out of 30.
What is on the test
- 30 multiple-choice questions based on Your keys to driving in Queensland.
- You need 27 correct (90%). You can get only 3 wrong.
- The written test is in two sections; the official practice test has 10 give-way questions and 20 road rules questions.
- The free Queensland mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 30 questions and pass mark.
PrepL or the written test
- PrepL is online learning with an assessment at the end. Enrol from 15 years 11 months. It costs the same as the written test.
- The written road rules test is taken at a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre. PrepL is replacing it, and until PrepL becomes mandatory you can choose either.
A study plan that works
- Read Your keys to driving in Queensland (free on qld.gov.au).
- Master give-way rules: intersections, roundabouts, T-intersections and stop and give-way signs make up a big part of the test.
- Take full 30-question mock tests and the official practice road rules test, and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 29 or 30 on several different mock tests: with only 3 mistakes allowed, there is little room.
After you pass
From age 16, apply for your learner licence. Learners under 25 log 100 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), and must pass the hazard perception test before the practical driving test.
