In South Australia you get your learner's permit (L's) by completing the myLs online course or passing a theory test, both based on the Driver's Handbook.
Two ways to get your L's
- myLs: an online learning course you can start from 15 years and 9 months.
- Theory test: taken at a Service SA centre.
- The Department for Infrastructure and Transport does not publish a fixed question count online; the free SA mock tests on PassDriveTest use 40 questions with 32 needed (80%) as a practice format.
A study plan that works
- Read the SA Driver's Handbook on mylicence.sa.gov.au.
- Learn the signs on the SA road signs tab, including the 25 km/h koala crossings and emergency services speed zones.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Learner's permit rules
- Display L plates front and rear, and carry your permit.
- Maximum 100 km/h, even where a higher limit applies.
- No alcohol at all, and no mobile phone use at all, including hands-free.
- Drive with a qualified supervising driver who has held an unconditional licence for the previous 2 years.
- Log 75 hours of supervised driving, 15 at night.
- Hold the permit at least 12 months if under 25, or 6 months if 25 or over.
- Four or more demerit points while a learner breaches your permit conditions.
Take a free SA learner's mock test to see where you stand.
