In Tasmania you start with Plates Plus, the government's learner driver program, and the driver knowledge test on the Tasmanian Road Rules.
The test
- Based on the Tasmanian Road Rules Handbook and Plates Plus material.
- You can start Plates Plus and the knowledge test from 15 years and 11 months; the learner licence is issued at 16.
- The Department of State Growth does not publish a fixed question count online; the free Tasmanian mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions with 24 needed (80%) as a practice format.
A study plan that works
- Read the Tasmanian Road Rules Handbook and work through Plates Plus.
- Learn the signs on the Tasmania road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Learner licence rules
- Log 80 hours of supervised driving, 15 at night. Each one-hour lesson with a certified instructor counts as two hours (up to 20).
- Hold the learner licence at least 12 consecutive months.
- Maximum 90 km/h and zero alcohol. No phone use while driving, except music or GPS directions set up before the trip.
- Learners may never tow.
Drivers who complete P1 and P2 with no demerit points or disqualifying offences receive a free three-year full licence under Tasmania's safer driver reward.
