To get a WA learner's permit you pass the Computerised Theory Test (CTT) at a Department of Transport centre. You can apply from age 16.
What is on the test
- 30 multiple-choice questions based on the Drive Safe handbook.
- You need at least 24 correct (80%).
- Taken in person; it cannot be done from home.
- Fees: $22.40 for the first sit, $19.20 for each resit.
- A pass is valid for 5 years; the learner's permit is valid for 3 years.
- The free WA mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 30 questions and pass mark.
A study plan that works
- Read Drive Safe, the handbook for WA road users (free on transport.wa.gov.au), and try the official road rules quiz.
- Learn the signs on the WA road signs tab.
- Take full 30-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 27 or more on several different mock tests.
Topics that catch people out
- Default speed limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas and 110 km/h outside them unless signed.
- Learner rules: L plates, zero BAC, maximum 100 km/h, and no driving in Kings Park.
- Novice demerit limits and the passenger and night limits on red P plates.
After you pass
Use the free digital Learner Log Book (Learn&Log in the Service WA app) to record supervised driving. The Hazard Perception Test and the practical driving assessment come later; check the Department of Transport for current eligibility.
