You can take the ICBC knowledge test in two ways: online, which has been possible since 9 June 2026, or in person at a driver licensing office. Either way the test costs $15, has 50 questions, and you need 40 correct.
Option 1: online
- Register and pay the $15 fee online at icbc.com. You register with your primary ID.
- You have 72 hours after registering to start the test.
- Once you start, you have 45 minutes to finish, in one sitting.
- Check ICBC's requirements for the device, camera and room before you start, so the test is not cancelled.
- Passing online does not license you. Your pass is valid for one year.
After passing online: visit an office
Go to a driver licensing office to get your Class 7L licence. Some offices ask you to book a 10-minute appointment. Bring:
- Two pieces of accepted ID, including the same primary ID you used to register for the test.
- If you are under 19, a parent or guardian consent form with an original signature (or the parent can sign at the office).
- Your pass email, printed or on your phone.
- Payment for the $10 learner's licence, and any debt owed to ICBC or the province.
- Glasses or contact lenses for the vision screening, if you need them.
Option 2: at a driver licensing office
- Most offices give the knowledge test without an appointment, but they may not be able to test everyone when it is busy. Arrive early, or book through icbc.com.
- You do the vision and medical screening, then the test.
- The in-office test is offered in 11 languages: English, French, Arabic, Cantonese, Croatian, Farsi, Mandarin, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese. If you would rather take it in one of these, the office is the way to go.
- Bring the same documents as above: two pieces of ID, parent consent if under 19, and payment.
Which should I choose?
Online saves a trip and lets you test when you are ready, but you still visit an office for the licence. In-office testing gives you the language choices above and gets everything done in one visit if the office is not too busy.
