How to pass the MPI knowledge test (Manitoba Class 5)

To get a Manitoba Class 5 learner licence (5L) you pass the MPI knowledge test and a vision test.

The test

  • Computer-based, 30 minutes, not open book, based on the Manitoba Driver's Handbook.
  • Fee: $12.
  • Offered in English and French and 28 other languages, with audio in every language. Ask for your language and audio when you book.
  • The free Manitoba mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions with 24 needed (80%) as a practice format.

Booking

  • Buy and book the test on MPI's Online Services, or through an Autopac agent. You can cancel or reschedule online.
  • Most tests are by appointment. MPI's Gateway Service Centre in Winnipeg also takes walk-in knowledge tests on weekdays.
  • Under 18, you need a parent or legal guardian's written approval.

A study plan that works

  1. Read the Manitoba Driver's Handbook (free online from MPI).
  2. Learn the signs on the Manitoba road signs tab.
  3. Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
  4. Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.

Graduated licensing

  • Learner (5L): from 16, or 15½ if enrolled in high-school driver education (Driver Z). Drive with a supervisor who has held a full licence for 3 or more years. Hold it 9 months.
  • Intermediate (5I): pass the road test. Zero alcohol; from midnight to 5 a.m. only one passenger unless a supervisor sits in front. 15 months.
  • Full (5F): granted after the intermediate stage with a clean record.

Take a free Manitoba mock test to see where you stand.
