How to pass the Newfoundland and Labrador learner's test

In Newfoundland and Labrador your first licence is the Class 5 Level I learner's permit. You pass a written test, which you can take online.

The test

  • Rules of the road, safe driving and road signs, from the Road Users' Guide (the NL driver's handbook).
  • Pass mark: 85%.
  • Take it online on MyGovNL in English. French and Ukrainian versions are booked at an office.
  • Passed results are valid for six months.
  • The free Newfoundland and Labrador mock tests on PassDriveTest let you practise at a high standard; aim above 85%.

After passing online

Visit a Motor Registration office or Government Service Centre to have your identity and result verified, take a vision test and pay for the learner's permit. The permit is not valid until you do this. If you are under 19, a parent or guardian must consent.

A study plan that works

  1. Read the Road Users' Guide (free on gov.nl.ca/motorregistration).
  2. Learn the signs on the Newfoundland and Labrador road signs tab.
  3. Take full mock tests and aim for 90% or more on several of them.

Level I rules

  • Drive with a licensed driver with at least four years of full Class 5 experience. No other passengers.
  • No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • Display a novice driver sign.
  • Stay at Level I at least 12 months (8 with approved driver education) before the road test. The permit is valid for two years.

Take a free Newfoundland and Labrador mock test to see where you stand.
