How to pass the NWT Class 7 knowledge exam

In the Northwest Territories your first licence is the Class 7 learner's licence. You pass a vision screening and a knowledge exam with Driver and Vehicle Services.

The exam

  • From age 15.
  • Written exam on the rules of the road, with the Class 7 signs test included, based on the NWT Driver's Basic Manual.
  • Fee: $44. Book, cancel or rebook online.
  • The free NWT mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions with 24 needed (80%) as a practice format.

A study plan that works

  1. Read the NWT Driver's Basic Manual.
  2. Learn the signs on the NWT road signs tab.
  3. Take full mock tests and aim for 90% or more.

Learner and probationary rules

  • Learner (Class 7): drive with a supervisor who has a full Class 5 licence with at least 24 months of experience. No other passengers. Hold it at least one year.
  • Probationary (Class 5P): no more than one front-seat passenger.
  • Learner or probationary drivers are suspended for one month at 6 demerit points.
  • Full Class 5 from age 17, after at least one year as a probationary driver with fewer than 6 demerit points.

Take a free NWT mock test to see where you stand.
