In Nunavut you start with a Class 7 learner's licence, which lets you drive a Class 5 or 6 vehicle while you learn. The Motor Vehicles Division gives the tests.
The written test
- The basic written examination has two parts: rules of the road and safe driving, and sign identification.
- If you cannot read the written test, the examiner can give you an oral test.
- Questions are based on the Nunavut Driver's Manual.
- The free Nunavut mock tests on PassDriveTest use 40 questions covering signs and rules, as a practice format.
A study plan that works
- Read the Nunavut Driver's Manual (free from the Government of Nunavut).
- Learn the signs on the Nunavut road signs tab: sign identification is its own part.
- Take full mock tests and aim for 90% or more.
Getting a Class 5 licence
- Be at least 16 with a valid learner's licence.
- Pass the written knowledge tests, a vision test and the road test. During the road test only you and the examination staff may be in the vehicle.
- Licences are issued for five years, expiring on your birthday.
- New residents with a licence from another province, territory or state must get a Nunavut licence within 30 days.
