Most people search for how to book the G1 test, but for the knowledge test there is usually nothing to book. DriveTest centres run G1 knowledge tests without appointments, first come, first served. Here is how it works and when you do need an appointment.
Walk in at any DriveTest centre
- The G1 knowledge test is offered at every DriveTest centre, with no appointment.
- Arrive at least one hour before the office closes so there is time to register, do the vision test and finish. DriveTest asks for extra time on Saturdays and school holidays.
- DriveTest's centre list shows an estimated wait time for each centre. Some busy centres also show a Join the Line option for inside services, so you can join the queue online before you leave home.
- Bring original ID showing your legal name and date of birth, and payment for the G1 package ($159.75, checked October 2026).
Addresses and opening hours: G1 test locations in the GTA and across Ontario.
When you do need an appointment
- ServiceOntario, Bay and College (downtown Toronto): offers the G1 test by appointment only.
- Verbal test with an interpreter: if you need the test read to you by a DriveTest employee so an interpreter can help, make an appointment. There is no extra fee for the verbal test, but you pay the interpreter, who must meet DriveTest's qualification rules.
- Sign-language interpreter or a separate accessible room: request an accommodation from DriveTest before you go.
You do not need an appointment for audio: every computer test kiosk can read the questions aloud. Tell the agent before you enter the test room and they give you headphones (or bring wired headphones with a 3.5 mm plug).
Can I do the G1 test online?
No. The G1 knowledge test is taken in person and supervised at a DriveTest centre. Practice tests online, including the free Ontario mock tests on PassDriveTest, are for studying only.
Booking the G2 road test
The road test is the one you book. You can take the G2 road test after 12 months with your G1 licence, or after 8 months if you finish an MTO-approved Beginner Driver Education course. Book it online at drivetest.ca, by phone or in person. Road tests are given in English or French only, and no interpreter or passenger may ride along.
