In Prince Edward Island your first licence is the instruction permit (Stage 1). You get it by passing a vision test and a written test with sign recognition, based on the PEI Driver's Handbook.
The test
- From age 16. Contact Access PEI to book the written and sign-recognition test, and bring your documents and fees.
- Students in a certified driver education program write the test in class, but still visit Access PEI for the vision test.
- If you fail, wait at least seven days before trying again.
- The free PEI mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions with 24 needed (80%) as a practice format.
A study plan that works
- Read the PEI Driver's Handbook (free on princeedwardisland.ca).
- Learn every sign on the PEI road signs tab: sign recognition is part of the test.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer: a fail costs you a week.
Stage 1 rules
- Display a yellow decal with a black L on the windshield.
- Your accompanying driver must be fully licensed for at least four years and ride beside you. Other passengers: only their immediate family.
- Under 21, no driving between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.
- A conviction carrying demerit points suspends the permit for at least 30 days.
- Hold the permit 365 days (or 275 with certified driver education) before the road test; without driver education you also complete the Novice Driver Course.
