How to pass the JPJ theory test (KPP01, Part I)

To get a car licence (Class D or DA) in Malaysia you first pass the JPJ Part I theory test on a computer. You take it after the KPP01 theory course at a JPJ-accredited driving institute.

The steps

  1. Register at a JPJ-accredited driving institute (minimum age 17).
  2. Attend the KPP01 theory course (6 hours).
  3. Pass the combined Part I test (KPP Gabungan, since 29 August 2025): 70 questions, at least 56 correct (80%), in 1 hour 15 minutes, in Bahasa Malaysia or English. The test fee is RM27 + 8% SST.
  4. Get your Learner Driving Licence (LDL): L plates front and rear, drive only with a certified trainer.
  5. After KPP02 circuit and KPP03 road training, and at least 30 days on the LDL, pass Part II (circuit) and Part III (road).
  6. Drive on a Probationary Driving Licence for 2 years (P plates, zero alcohol), then apply for the Competent Driving Licence.

What the test covers

  • Road signs: yellow diamond warnings, red-ringed prohibitions, blue mandatory signs, orange temporary signs, and Malay words such as BERHENTI (stop), BERI LALUAN (give way), AWAS (caution) and SEKOLAH (school).
  • Road markings and traffic lights, including yellow box junctions, double lines and green arrows.
  • Defensive driving: the CITO routine (mirror, signal, blind spot, manoeuvre), the two- and four-second rules, overtaking and junction rules.
  • Driving in various conditions: rain, aquaplaning, fog, floods, night driving and emergencies such as brake failure or a tyre burst.
  • Licences and the KEJARA demerit system.
  • Motorcycle rules: the combined test includes questions for motorcycles as well as cars, whichever licence you apply for.
  • Driver code of ethics and conduct (Kod Etika dan Tatakelakuan Pemandu), a chapter added in the KPP Gabungan book.

Key numbers

  • Speed: 110 km/h on expressways, 90 km/h on federal and state roads, lower where signed.
  • Alcohol: 50 mg per 100 ml of blood; P drivers must have none.
  • Breakdown on a highway: warning triangle 50 m behind the vehicle.
  • Rest every 2 hours on long journeys.

How to prepare

  1. Learn the signs by shape, colour and their Malay words.
  2. Memorise CITO and the junction sequence: information, position, speed, gear, acceleration.
  3. Read the KPP Gabungan eBook from your driving institute, including the motorcycle and code of ethics chapters.
  4. Take full 70-question mock tests until you score well above 56 every time.
