In Alaska you can get an instruction permit from age 14. You pass a knowledge test, and you can take it online at home.
What is on the test
- 20 questions from the Alaska Driver Manual, with 25 minutes allowed.
- Pass mark: 16 correct (80%).
- Take it online at ak.knowtodrive.com, any time, on your own device, or at a DMV office.
- The free Alaska mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 20 questions and pass mark.
A study plan that works
- Read the Alaska Driver Manual and try the DMV's sample knowledge test.
- Learn the signs on the Alaska road signs tab.
- Take full 20-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 18 or more on several different mock tests: with only 4 mistakes allowed, every topic counts.
Instruction permit rules
- From 14. The permit is valid for 2 years and can be renewed once.
- Drive with a licensed driver aged 21 or older with at least one year of experience in the same type of vehicle, in the passenger seat.
- Applicants aged 16 or 17 must hold the permit at least 6 months, with no violations in the last 6 months, before a license.
