To get an Arizona Class G instruction permit you pass the MVD's non-commercial knowledge test, in an office or at home.
The test
- Questions on Arizona traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the Arizona Driver License Manual.
- You need 80% or higher.
- The free Arizona mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions with 24 needed. MVD also has free practice tests on azdot.gov.
Taking it @ home
- A parent or legal guardian proctors the exam at home.
- It is scored as you go, so you see your result straight away.
- You can try again, with no extra fee.
- You still visit an MVD office (or authorised third party) to have the permit issued, and the 6-month holding period starts then.
A study plan that works
- Read the Arizona Driver License Manual (free on azdot.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Arizona road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and MVD's practice tests, and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Permit rules
- From 15 years and 6 months. The permit is valid for 12 months.
- Hold it for 6 months or until you turn 18 before the license.
- For a graduated license, complete at least 30 hours of supervised practice, 10 at night.
Take a free Arizona mock test to see where you stand.
