To get a Connecticut learner's permit you pass the DMV knowledge test and a vision test. Here is how it works and what comes after.
What is on the test
- 25 questions from the Connecticut Driver's Manual.
- Pass mark: 20 correct (80%).
- The $40 testing fee covers the vision, knowledge and road tests; the learner's permit is $19.
- The free Connecticut mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 25 questions and pass mark.
A study plan that works
- Read the Connecticut Driver's Manual (free on ct.gov/dmv).
- Learn the signs on the Connecticut road signs tab.
- Take full 25-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 23 or more on several different mock tests.
After the test
- The permit is valid until you get your license, or 2 years, whichever comes first.
- Anyone who has never held a license must take the 8-hour Safe Driving Practices course before getting a license.
- Teens (16–17): at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and a waiting period of 120 days with commercial or school training or 180 days with home training.
- Adults (18+): hold the adult learner's permit at least 90 days.
