How to pass the Delaware learner's permit test

Delaware teens get their Level 1 learner's permit through driver education: the written test and the road test are given by the driver education instructor.

The test

  • A written test on Delaware traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the Delaware Driver Manual, given in your driver education course.
  • The free Delaware mock tests on PassDriveTest use 30 questions at 80%. Ask your instructor about the current format.

A study plan that works

  1. Read the Delaware Driver Manual (free on dmv.de.gov).
  2. Learn the signs on the Delaware road signs tab.
  3. Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
  4. Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.

Level 1 permit rules

  • Age 16 to 18, after an approved driver education course and its written and road tests, with a sponsor signing the application.
  • First six months: supervised at all times. The sponsor certifies 50 hours of practice, 10 at night.
  • After that, limits on night-time driving and passengers apply.
  • The permit converts to a Class D license after a full 12 months of valid driving authority (suspension time does not count).
  • Zero tolerance: a BAC of 0.02 or more is an offence for drivers under 21.
