Taking the Florida permit test online or in person

"Can I take the Florida permit test online?" depends on your age. Florida allows the online Class E knowledge exam only for applicants under 18.

Under 18: online with an approved provider

  • Take the exam online through a FLHSMV-approved third-party administrator. FLHSMV lists approved providers on its website; avoid sites that are not on the list.
  • A parent or guardian must complete the Parent/Guardian On-line Test Proctoring form (HSMV 71144). It must be signed in front of a driver license examiner, or notarized if the parent will not be there.
  • When you pass, the provider sends your result to FLHSMV electronically. You do not need to bring proof of your score.
  • FLHSMV may pick you at random for a free, mandatory re-test in person without notice, so learn the material properly.
  • You also need a parent's consent form for the learner's license itself.

18 and over: in person

  • Take the exam in person at a driver license service center, a county tax collector office that offers driver license services, or in a classroom with an approved third-party administrator.
  • Many offices work by appointment. Check your county's tax collector or the FLHSMV office before you go.

Rules for everyone

  • The exam has 50 questions and you need 40 correct.
  • It is given in English only (since 6 February 2026).
  • With a third-party administrator you can take the exam up to three times in total. After that you must test at a driver license service center or tax collector office.
  • FLHSMV charges $10 for a knowledge re-test. Third-party providers set their own prices.
  • Complete the TLSAE drug and alcohol course too: you need it before your first license.

Getting the learner's license

Once you have passed the exam and finished TLSAE, go to a driver license office or tax collector office with your identity documents to get your learner's license. The original Class E fee is $48, and offices may add a service fee (fees checked October 2026).
