In Georgia your first permit is the Class CP instructional permit. You take a vision exam and a two-part knowledge exam at a Department of Driver Services (DDS) Customer Service Center.
What is on the test
- Road signs: 20 questions. You need 15 correct.
- Road rules: 20 questions. You need 15 correct.
- Each part is scored on its own: a strong score on rules does not make up for a weak one on signs.
- The free Georgia mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same two parts and pass marks.
A study plan that works
- Read the Georgia Drivers Manual (free on dds.georgia.gov).
- Learn every sign on the Georgia road signs tab: signs are half the test.
- Take the DDS online practice test and full mock tests, and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 18 or more out of 20 in both parts on several different mock tests.
- Be wary of sites or apps that claim to have the real "Georgia DMV" answers: DDS warns that they are fake.
Getting your permit
- From age 15. Bring your identity and residency documents.
- Under 18, a parent, guardian or authorised driver training instructor signs your application.
- With a permit, drive only with a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the front passenger seat.
Before your Class D license (16 and 17)
- Complete a DDS-approved driver education course and the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP).
- Log 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 at night.
Take a free Georgia mock test to see where you stand.
