To get an Iowa instruction permit you pass a knowledge test and a vision test. Teens can take the knowledge test at home through the Iowa DOT's Skip the Trip online permit test.
The test
- A knowledge test on Iowa traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the Iowa Driver's Manual.
- The free Iowa mock tests on PassDriveTest use 25 questions with 20 needed (80%). Check the current format with the Iowa DOT.
Taking it at home (Skip the Trip)
- A parent administers the test.
- Use a computer or laptop connected to the internet, not a phone or tablet.
- The DOT says you must be within 30 days of your 14th birthday or older, and under 18.
- You can also test at a DOT driver's license service center or a county treasurer office that offers driver's license services.
A study plan that works
- Read the Iowa Driver's Manual (free on iowadot.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Iowa road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 23 or more out of 25 on several different mock tests.
Instruction permit rules
- From 14.
- Drive with a licensed parent or guardian, an immediate family member aged 21 or older, a driver education instructor, or a person aged 25 or older with written permission.
- Before an intermediate license: hold the permit 12 months, keep a clean record for six consecutive months, and complete 20 hours of supervised driving, 2 at night.
Take a free Iowa mock test to see where you stand.
