Idaho's knowledge test is on the strict side: you can only miss 6 of 40 questions. Teens reach it through driver training and a supervised driving period.
What is on the test
- 40 questions from the Idaho Driver's Handbook.
- You can miss up to 6, so you need 34 correct (85%).
- Adults must pass it before getting a Class D instruction permit.
- The free Idaho mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 40 questions and pass mark.
Teens: the SIP path
- From 14½, take an approved driver training course. Your instructor keeps your Driver Training Permit until you pass the course; then it becomes your Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP).
- Drive for at least six calendar months under supervision, with 50 hours logged, 10 at night. The supervisor must be over 21 with a valid license, beside you.
- A traffic conviction during the SIP period cancels the permit and restarts the supervised period.
- Then pass the written knowledge test and the skills test.
A study plan that works
- Read the Idaho Driver's Handbook (free on itd.idaho.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Idaho road signs tab.
- Take full 40-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 37 or more on several different mock tests: with only 6 mistakes allowed, a weak topic can fail you.
