To get an Indiana learner's permit you pass a vision screening and the BMV knowledge exam. The exam has two parts, and you must pass both.
What is on the test
- Road signs and traffic rules and laws, as two separate parts.
- You need 80% or more in each part.
- The free Indiana mock tests on PassDriveTest use 16 sign questions and 34 rules questions, each part marked on its own.
- Passing results are valid for 180 days.
A study plan that works
- Read the Indiana Driver's Manual (free on in.gov/bmv). Chapter 9 explains the knowledge exam.
- Learn the signs on the Indiana road signs tab.
- Try the BMV's practice knowledge exam, then full mock tests, and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more in both parts on several different mock tests.
Getting your permit
- At 15, if you are enrolled in an approved behind-the-wheel driver education course.
- At 16, without driver education.
- Under 18, keep a log of at least 50 hours of supervised driving.
- Hold the permit at least 180 days before a probationary license. Applicants 18 and over have no holding period.
