In Kansas your first step is the instruction permit. You get it with a vision test and either the written test or a driver education completion certificate.
The test
- A written test on Kansas traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the Kansas Driving Handbook.
- A driver education completion certificate can be used instead of the written test.
- The free Kansas mock tests on PassDriveTest use 25 questions with 20 needed (80%). Check the current format with the Division of Vehicles.
A study plan that works
- Read the Kansas Driving Handbook (free on ksrevenue.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Kansas road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 23 or more out of 25 on several different mock tests.
Instruction permit rules
- From 14. Under 16, a parent or guardian signs an affidavit at the office.
- Applicants under 17 hold the permit 1 year or until their 17th birthday, whichever comes first, before a restricted license.
- Log at least 50 hours of practice driving, 10 at night, supervised by an adult aged 21 or older, on an affidavit signed by a parent or guardian.
