To get a Louisiana learner's permit you complete driver education and pass the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) knowledge test and vision test.
What is on the test
- 40 questions from the Louisiana Class D and E Driver's Guide.
- Pass mark: 80% (32 correct).
- The free Louisiana mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 40 questions and pass mark.
Driver education first
- Teens aged 15 to 17 take the 38-hour driver education course: 30 hours in the classroom and 8 behind the wheel.
- A temporary instructional permit for the course can be issued from age 14.
A study plan that works
- Read the Louisiana Driver's Guide (free on expresslane.la.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Louisiana road signs tab.
- Take full 40-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 36 or more on several different mock tests.
Learner's permit rules
- From 15.
- Drive with a licensed parent or guardian, a licensed adult aged 21 or older, or a licensed sibling aged 18 or older.
- Hold the permit at least 180 days and until 16 before an intermediate license. The state's graduated licensing guide also requires 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 at night.
