How to pass the Massachusetts learner's permit test

In Massachusetts you need to pass the RMV learner's permit exam and a vision test to get a Class D learner's permit. You can take the exam online, but only after visiting a Service Center first.

What is on the test

  • 25 questions from the Massachusetts Driver's Manual.
  • Pass mark: 18 correct (72%).
  • 25 minutes to finish.
  • Fee: $30.
  • The free Massachusetts mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 25 questions and pass mark.

Taking it online

  1. Book an appointment at an RMV Service Center and bring your application and identification documents. Under 18, you also need a parent or guardian's signature.
  2. Once your documents are verified, the RMV sends you login instructions.
  3. Take the exam online on a computer with a working camera, in a quiet room, with no phone or tablet.
  4. Do not use the manual or search the internet during the exam.

A study plan that works

  1. Read the Massachusetts Driver's Manual (free on mass.gov).
  2. Learn the signs on the Massachusetts road signs tab.
  3. Take full 25-question mock tests under a 25-minute limit and review every wrong answer.
  4. Aim for 22 or more on several different mock tests.

Permit rules

  • From age 16.
  • Drive only with a licensed driver aged 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience, in the front passenger seat.
  • For a license between 16½ and 18, complete a driver education program and pass its final exam.

Take a free Massachusetts mock test to see where you stand.
