How to pass the Maryland MVA learner's permit test

Maryland's learner's permit test has one of the highest pass marks in the US: you can only miss 3 questions. Here is how it works and how to prepare.

What is on the test

  • 25 questions on Maryland traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the Maryland Driver's Manual.
  • 20 minutes to finish.
  • Pass mark: 88%, which is 22 correct.
  • Taken on the MVA's computer testing system at an MVA branch office.
  • The free Maryland mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 25 questions and pass mark.

A study plan that works

  1. Read the Maryland Driver's Manual (free on the MVA website).
  2. Learn the signs on the Maryland road signs tab.
  3. Take full 25-question mock tests under a 20-minute limit. With only 3 mistakes allowed, timing and accuracy both matter.
  4. Review every wrong answer and find the rule in the manual.
  5. Aim for 24 or 25 on several different mock tests before you go.

After you pass

With your learner's permit, log at least 60 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night (from 30 minutes before sunset to 30 minutes after sunrise), before the driving test. Check the MVA website for the minimum age and how long you must hold the permit.

Take a free Maryland mock test to see where you stand.
