Montana teens usually get their first learner license through traffic education. You pass the written knowledge exam on safe driving, traffic laws, rules and signs.
The test
- A written knowledge exam from the Montana Driver Manual.
- Taken at a Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) driver exam station, or in a school traffic education program certified under the Cooperative Driver Testing Program, where certified teachers can give the tests.
- The free Montana mock tests on PassDriveTest use 33 questions. Check the current format and pass mark with the MVD.
A study plan that works
- Read the Montana Driver Manual (free online).
- Learn the signs on the Montana road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Learner license rules
- From 14½ if you are in or have finished an approved traffic education course; otherwise from 16. Online driver education courses are not approved.
- The learner license is valid for 1 year.
- New drivers under 18 use it for six consecutive months and certify 50 hours of supervised driving before a restricted license, which has night-time and passenger limits.
