In North Dakota you can get an instruction permit from age 14. You pass a vision screening and a knowledge test, online or in person.
The test
- A knowledge test from the North Dakota noncommercial driver's license manual.
- Take it online at nd.knowtodrive.com, or in person at a Driver License Site.
- The free North Dakota mock tests on PassDriveTest use 25 questions at 80%. Check the current format with NDDOT.
A study plan that works
- Read the North Dakota driver's license manual (free on dot.nd.gov).
- Learn the signs on the North Dakota road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Instruction permit rules
- From 14; under 18 a parent or legal guardian sponsors you.
- Complete an acceptable driver education course (30 hours of classroom plus behind-the-wheel instruction).
- Log 50 hours of supervised driving, including night driving and varied road conditions.
- Holders aged 14 or 15 keep the permit for a set period before a license: NDDOT pages give 12 months, while the manual allows 12 months or until 16 (at least six months). Check the current rule with NDDOT.
