In New Jersey you pass the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) knowledge test and a vision test to get a permit. Teens usually start with a special learner's permit through a driving school.
What is on the test
- 50 questions on New Jersey traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the New Jersey Driver Manual.
- Pass mark: 80%, which is 40 correct.
- If you fail, wait 7 days before retaking it.
- The free New Jersey mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 50 questions and pass mark.
A study plan that works
- Read the New Jersey Driver Manual and try the MVC's sample knowledge test (free on nj.gov/mvc).
- Learn the signs on the New Jersey road signs tab.
- Take full 50-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 45 or more on several different mock tests.
Permits for teens
- At 16, a special learner's permit if you are enrolled in a behind-the-wheel course at a school or licensed driving school. The knowledge and vision tests can be taken through the school.
- Schedule the road test 6 months after passing the knowledge test; you cannot get a license before 17.
- Permit holders under 21 whose permit was issued on or after 1 February 2025 must complete 50 hours of practice driving.
