In New Mexico, first-time drivers pass the MVD Knowledge Exam. Teens go through a three-stage graduated licensing system that starts with an instructional permit.
The test
- A written knowledge exam on New Mexico traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the New Mexico Driver Manual.
- MVD offices usually do not start the written test after 3 p.m.
- If you fail, you can retake it as soon as you like, but no more than twice a week.
- For teens, a contracted driver education school may give the exam.
- The free New Mexico mock tests on PassDriveTest use 25 questions. Check the current format and pass mark with the MVD.
A study plan that works
- Read the New Mexico Driver Manual (free on mvd.newmexico.gov).
- Learn the signs on the New Mexico road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Teen instructional permit
- Pass the vision test and Knowledge Exam, with a referral card from an approved driver education school.
- Drive with an adult aged 21 or older who has been licensed for at least 3 years.
- Hold the permit at least six months, complete driver education with its 3-hour DWI component, and log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 at night.
- After the road skills exam, hold the provisional license at least 12 months.
