To get a Nevada instruction permit you pass a vision test and a knowledge test at the DMV. Here is how it works and how to prepare.
The test
- Questions on Nevada traffic laws, road signs, road markings and safe driving, from the Nevada Driver Handbook.
- You take it on the DMV's automated testing equipment or on paper. If reading is difficult for you, ask for an oral examination.
- A $25 fee covers the initial knowledge and skills tests.
- The free Nevada mock tests on PassDriveTest use 25 questions with 20 needed (80%). Check the current format with the DMV.
A study plan that works
- Read the Nevada Driver Handbook (free on dmv.nv.gov).
- Learn the signs and road markings on the Nevada road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests before you go.
Getting your permit
- From 15½. Bring proof of your name, date of birth, Social Security number and Nevada address.
- Under 18, a parent or guardian must be there to sign a financial responsibility statement.
- The permit is valid for one year.
Before your license (under 18)
- Hold the permit at least 6 months and be at least 16.
- Log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 in darkness, on the official DMV form, or 100 hours if you do not complete a 30-hour driver education course.
- Then schedule the skills test.
Take a free Nevada mock test to see where you stand.
