Ohio lets you take the BMV knowledge test for your temps online at home. It is the same test, 40 questions with 75% to pass, but there are rules about who can use it and how.
Who can test online
- Anyone from age 15 years and 6 months getting a regular car permit.
- Not online: people with a suspended license, a medical flag on their license or an active out-of-state license, people who need special assistance, and anyone applying for a motorcycle, moped or commercial license. They test in person at a BMV driver exam station.
What you need
- A computer or laptop with a working webcam.
- If you are under 19, a supervising adult must be with you as proctor for the whole test.
- The supervising adult, and applicants aged 19 or older, must first pass the LexisNexis identity verification.
Attempts
- You can take the test online up to two times in six months.
- You must wait at least 24 hours between the two attempts.
- Because the online tries are limited, take full mock tests first and only test when you score well above 30 out of 40.
After you pass: buy your temps
- Go to a deputy registrar license agency within 60 days of passing.
- You do the vision screening there, show your identity documents and pay for the permit.
- Teens then hold the temps for at least 6 months, log 50 hours of driving (10 at night) and complete driver education before the road test.
Prefer to test in person?
You can still take the knowledge test in person at a BMV driver exam station. Check the BMV website for station hours before you go.
