To get an Oklahoma learner permit you pass the Oklahoma written exam, online or in person at Service Oklahoma (SOK), unless driver education lets you skip it.
The test
- A written knowledge exam on Oklahoma traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the Oklahoma Driver Manual (see SOK's Driver Study Hub).
- You can take it online twice. After two failed online attempts, retake it in person at a Service Oklahoma location.
- A completion certificate from an approved driver education school can waive the written test; parent-taught driver education cannot.
- The free Oklahoma mock tests on PassDriveTest use 50 questions with 40 needed (80%).
A study plan that works
- Use SOK's Driver Study Hub and read the Oklahoma Driver Manual.
- Learn the signs on the Oklahoma road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer, especially before your two online attempts.
- Aim for 45 or more out of 50 on several different mock tests.
Learner permit rules
- Age 15: enrolled in and receiving instruction in an approved driver education course.
- Age 16: driver education is optional.
- Hold the permit at least 180 days and complete 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, 10 at night, verified by a parent on the Affidavit of Driver Training.
