Rhode Island teens get a Limited Instruction Permit after driver education. The knowledge exam is given either through the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) or at DMV headquarters.
The test
- A computerized knowledge exam from the Rhode Island Driver's Manual.
- If you took the CCRI course, you take the exam through the college.
- If you took an approved course at another driving school, bring your completion certificate to DMV headquarters in Cranston.
- The free Rhode Island mock tests on PassDriveTest use 25 questions at 80%. Check the current format with the DMV.
A study plan that works
- Read the Rhode Island Driver's Manual (free on dmv.ri.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Rhode Island road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.

- Complete the 33-hour driver education course certified by CCRI.
- Bring your original course certificate, and a parent or guardian, or their notarized signature on the LI-1 form.
