To get a learner permit in Tennessee you pass a knowledge test and a vision screening. Teens can take the knowledge test online at home. Here is how it works and how to prepare.
What is on the test
- 30 questions on Tennessee traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the Tennessee Driver License Manual.
- Pass mark: 80%, which is 24 correct.
- The free Tennessee mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same length and pass mark.
Option 1: online at home (ages 15 to 17)
- A parent or legal guardian supervises you through the Tennessee Proctor ID app. One parent can proctor up to five applicants.
- Use a computer, laptop or tablet, not a phone.
- You have 60 minutes. Stay on the test screen the whole time: navigating away is an automatic fail.
- You can take the online test twice at most, with 24 hours between attempts.
- Afterwards, visit a Driver Services Center with your original documents for the vision screening and your permit.
Option 2: at a Driver Services Center
Take the written test and vision screening in person. Bring original documents; photocopies are not accepted.
A study plan that works
- Read the Tennessee Driver License Manual (free on tn.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Tennessee road signs tab.
- Take full 30-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 27 or more on several different mock tests, especially before the online test, where you only get two tries.
