Where to take the Texas permit test: online course or DPS office

People often ask whether they can take the Texas permit test online. The answer depends on your age and how you do driver education.

Teens: in your driver education course

  • You can start the classroom part of driver education at 14 and apply for a learner license at 15.
  • Most approved courses, including online and parent-taught courses, give the knowledge exam during the classroom phase, either after the first 6 hours (concurrent method) or after all 24 hours (block method).
  • If you passed the exam in your course, bring the proof to DPS: your DE-964 certificate with the test result, results in a sealed envelope from the driving school, or your parent-taught course results.
  • If you have not taken the exam yet, DPS gives it to you when you apply.

Adults: DPS office or third-party provider

  • You can take the knowledge test at a DPS driver license office or with an approved third-party provider.
  • If you are 18 to 24, you first need a 6-hour adult driver education course (classroom or online). It is waived if you are a new resident surrendering a valid out-of-state license.
  • Book a DPS appointment online before you go.

What to bring to DPS

  • Your completed application (form DL-14A).
  • Proof of identity, US citizenship or lawful presence and Texas residency, and your Social Security number.
  • Proof of insurance for each vehicle you own, or a statement that you do not own one.
  • Teens: your driver education certificate, and a Verification of Enrollment form from your school or proof of a diploma or GED.
  • Payment: $16 for a learner or provisional license under 18; $33 for a Class C license aged 18 to 84 (8 years). The knowledge test is included (fees checked October 2026).

At the office you give your thumbprints and signature, have your photo taken and pass a vision exam. You leave with a temporary license, and the card arrives by mail in about 2 to 3 weeks.
