To get a Utah learner permit you pass a knowledge test at a Driver License Division (DLD) office. It is closed book and fairly long, so prepare well.
What is on the test
- 50 questions, closed book, from the Utah Driver Handbook.
- Pass mark: 80% (40 correct).
- It usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
- Taken at a DLD office; the online test on dld.utah.gov is practice only.
- The free Utah mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 50 questions and pass mark.
A study plan that works
- Read the Utah Driver Handbook (free on dld.utah.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Utah road signs tab.
- Take full 50-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 45 or more on several different mock tests.
Learner permit rules
- From age 15. Under 18, a parent or guardian signs for financial responsibility.
- Under 18: hold the permit 6 months and until 16, complete driver education, and log 40 hours of practice, 10 after sunset.
- 19 and over: hold the permit at least 90 days.
- Your test score and permit stay valid for a limited time (the 2026 handbook says 18 months), so do not wait too long to finish.
