Vermont's learner's permit test is taken online, at mydmv.vermont.gov. It is short, so every question counts.
What is on the test
- 20 questions, each with four answers, from the Vermont Driver's Manual.
- Pass mark: 16 correct (80%).
- If you fail, wait at least one day before the next attempt.
- Fees: $39 to apply (and again for each retest after a fail), then $24 for the permit once you pass.
- The free Vermont mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 20 questions and pass mark.
A study plan that works
- Read the Vermont Driver's Manual (free on dmv.vermont.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Vermont road signs tab.
- Take full 20-question mock tests and review every wrong answer. Each failed attempt costs another $39.
- Aim for 18 or more on several different mock tests before you pay.
Permit rules
- From 15. If you are 15 to 17, a parent or legal guardian signs the application before you can take the test, and you need a clean driving record for the previous two years.
- Drive with a licensed, unimpaired parent or guardian, or a licensed, unimpaired person aged 25 or older.
- Hold the permit at least one year before a junior driver's license, and complete 40 hours of practice, 10 at night, in addition to driver education.
