To get a Washington instruction permit you pass the Department of Licensing (DOL) knowledge test at an approved testing location, usually a driver training school.
What is on the test
- 40 multiple-choice questions from the Washington State Driver Guide.
- Pass mark: 32 correct (80%).
- A passing score is good for 2 years.
- Taken in person at an approved testing location; the fee is set by the location. DOL's online practice test is in English and Spanish.
- The free Washington mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 40 questions and pass mark.
A study plan that works
- Read the Washington State Driver Guide (free on dol.wa.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Washington road signs tab.
- Take full 40-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 36 or more on several different mock tests.
Permit rules
- From 15 if you are enrolling in a driver training course, or 15½ without one.
- The permit is valid for one year and can be renewed twice.
- For a first license at 16 or 17, hold the permit at least 6 months and log supervised driving, including night hours, with a licensed driver who has at least 3 years of experience. Check the current Driver Guide for the exact hours.
- From 1 November 2026, first-time applicants under 25 must also pass a free online course on work zone and first responder safety.
