Wisconsin's first permit is the Class D instruction permit, usually called temps. To get it you pass the knowledge test, the signs test and a vision screening.
The tests
- A knowledge test on the rules of the road and a separate signs test, based on the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook.
- You need 80% or better.
- The free Wisconsin mock tests on PassDriveTest use 50 questions with 40 needed.
Taking it online (ages 15 to 17)
- Teens aged 15 to 17 can take the knowledge test online.
- You get two online attempts.
- After passing, print your completion certificate(s) and visit any DMV customer service center to apply for your permit.
A study plan that works
- Read the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook (free on wisconsindot.gov).
- Learn the signs on the Wisconsin road signs tab: there is a separate signs test.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more before your online attempts.
Permit rules
- From 15. Under 18 you must be enrolled in or have completed a certified driver education program.
- The instruction permit is valid for 18 months.
- Before the road test: hold the permit at least six months, have no violations in the past six months, and log 50 hours of practice with a parent or guardian, 10 at night.
