West Virginia teens start with a Level 1 instruction permit. You get it by passing the DMV knowledge test, which you can take online through Know to Drive.
The test
- A knowledge test on West Virginia traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, from the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook.
- $7.50 per attempt.
- Available online through Know to Drive, or at a DMV regional office.
- The free West Virginia mock tests on PassDriveTest use 25 questions. Check the current format and pass mark with the DMV.
A study plan that works
- Read the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (free on the DMV website).
- Learn the signs on the West Virginia road signs tab.
- Take full mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests.
Level 1 permit rules
- Age 15 to 17. A parent or legal guardian signs your application, and you need a current school eligibility form.
- Drive only from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the front seat. The permit cannot be renewed.
- For a Level 2 intermediate license: hold the permit six months, stay infraction-free for six months, and certify 50 hours of driving, 10 at night.
