You book the driver theory test on the official site, theorytest.ie. It costs €45 for a car. Here is what you need and what to expect.
Before you book
- Age: from 1 November 2026 you must be at least 15 on the day of your test (the RSA has recommended this since May 2026). If you are younger, you must reschedule.
- Choose the test category B for a car. If you pick the category name in Irish, the test is delivered in Irish.
- If you need support, such as reading assistance or dyslexia support, check the accessibility options on theorytest.ie before you book.
What to bring: one original ID
Bring one of these, and make sure the name matches your booking exactly:
- Public Services Card
- Passport
- National identity card from an EU/EEA state or Switzerland
- Irish learner permit or full driving licence (category B)
It must be the original: photocopies and photos on your phone are not accepted.
On test day
- Arrive 30 minutes early.
- You have 45 minutes to answer 40 questions, and you need 35 correct.
- If you need to change your appointment, use the reschedule or cancel service on theorytest.ie in good time; late changes can cost you the fee.
After the test
A pass is valid for 2 years. Use it to apply for your first learner permit through the NDLS.
