To get a New Zealand learner licence you pass the theory test on the Road Code. The pass mark is high, so careful study pays off.
What is on the test
- 35 multiple-choice questions on a computer: general road code and car-specific questions in random order. You can change an answer until you move on.
- You need at least 32 correct: more than 3 wrong means booking another test.
- Available in English, Arabic, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Fijian, Filipino, Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Māori, Punjabi, Samoan, Thai and Tongan. An accredited interpreter, extra time or an oral test may be possible if you need them.
- The free NZ mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 35 questions and pass mark.
Booking and fees
- From age 16.
- Book at a driver licensing agent: most AA offices and some VTNZ stations. It is not booked online.
- Fee: $96.10, which includes your first theory test and a second if needed. A third or later test costs $54.60.
A study plan that works
- Read the official Road Code (free on the NZTA website).
- Learn the give-way rules and the signs on the New Zealand road signs tab.
- Take full 35-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
- Aim for 34 or 35 on several different mock tests: with only 3 mistakes allowed, every topic counts.
After you pass
As a learner you drive only with a supervisor who has held a full licence for at least two years, and display L plates. You can sit the restricted licence test after at least six months.
