The California permit test is the DMV knowledge test: multiple-choice questions based on the California Driver's Handbook. Pass it, and the vision exam, to get your instruction permit. Here is how it works and how to prepare.
How the test works
- Multiple-choice questions on traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, all from the California Driver's Handbook.
- Pass mark: 80%. The DMV does not publish a fixed number of questions. The free California mock tests on PassDriveTest use 46 questions with 37 needed, so you practice at the same 80% standard.
- Three attempts per application. After that you must reapply and pay again.
- Minors wait 7 days after a failed test before trying again (not counting the day of the failure).
- No testing aids: no handbook, phone or notes.
- You can take it at a DMV office or online at home.
A study plan that works
- Read the California Driver's Handbook from start to finish. It is free on dmv.ca.gov.
- Learn the signs by shape and colour, then each sign on the California road signs tab.
- Take a full mock test early to find your weak areas.
- Review every wrong answer and find the rule in the handbook.
- Learn California's numbers: speed limits near schools (25 mph) and on highways (65 mph unless posted), following distances, curb colours for parking, and the blood alcohol limits (0.01 under 21).
- Aim for 90% or more on several different mock tests. With only three tries per application, it pays to be ready.
Topics that catch people out
- Curb colours: red, yellow, white, green and blue each mean something different.
- Right of way at uncontrolled intersections, four-way stops and roundabouts, and when turning left.
- Sharing the road with bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians and large trucks, including the 3-foot passing rule for bicycles.
- Provisional license rules for drivers under 18: no driving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and no passengers under 20 without an adult for the first 12 months.
What to bring to the DMV
- Your completed application (start it at dmv.ca.gov), and a DMV appointment.
- Proof of identity and California residency.
- The $46 application fee (covers the permit, three knowledge test attempts and one drive test for 12 months).
- Under 18: a parent or guardian signature and your driver education certificate.
- Glasses or contact lenses for the vision exam, if you need them.
Offices do not start knowledge tests after 4:30 p.m. Take a free California mock test before you go.
