In Alberta you take the Class 7 knowledge test at a registry agent: a private office licensed by the province to handle driver's licences. There are registry agents in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge and towns across Alberta.
Before you go
- You can apply from age 14. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must come with you, with proof of guardianship, and sign a consent form.
- Registry agents are private businesses and set their own hours. Call or check the website of the registry you plan to visit to ask whether you need an appointment and when they stop testing for the day.
What to bring
- Proof of identity with your photo, name and date of birth, such as a passport.
- Proof you can legally be in Canada, such as a Canadian birth certificate, a permanent resident card, or an IRCC work or study permit.
- Proof you live in Alberta, showing your name and address, dated less than 90 days ago, such as a utility bill or lease agreement.
- If your name has changed, proof of the change (for example a marriage certificate).
- If you hold a licence from another province or country, you will have to surrender it.
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them: you also take a vision test.
Registry agents follow the province's ID rules, and the list on alberta.ca is not complete: check with your registry if you are unsure about a document.
Fees
- Knowledge test: $17 government fee for each attempt (checked October 2026).
- Registry agents add their own service fee, and the licence card costs extra. Totals differ between registries, so ask before you pay.
Languages, audio and translators
- The Class 7 test is offered in 25 languages: Amharic, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Cree, Dutch, English, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Oromo, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Thai, Tagalog, Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese.
- Test stations can read the questions aloud through headphones. Some offices charge for disposable headphones.
- You may use a paper English conversion dictionary if you need a little help with English.
- An oral test in English, read by the registry agent, is available if you have difficulty reading.
- Translators: if your language is not offered, you can bring a translator with a valid Translation Identification Number (TIN) to your first test. If it is offered, you must first try the test at least 3 times before you can ask Alberta for a translator.
If you fail
You can take the test once a day, so you can try again tomorrow. You pay the fee again each time. Use the time to review the topics you missed.
After you pass
You buy your Class 7 licence at the registry and get a temporary licence, valid for 30 days or until your card arrives (usually within 21 business days).
