The Class 7 knowledge test is the written test for your first Alberta driver's licence, the Class 7 learner's licence. You take it at a registry agent office. This guide explains how the test works and how to prepare so you pass the first time.
What is on the Class 7 test
- 30 multiple-choice questions on road signs, rules of the road and safe driving.
- Pass mark: 25 out of 30 (83%). You can get up to 5 wrong.
- You take it on a computer at a registry agent office, then a vision test.
- 25 languages, including Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, Tagalog, Chinese, Spanish and French. Test stations also have audio that reads the questions and answers aloud. See the Punjabi and Hindi guides.
- If you fail, you can try again the next day. You pay the fee each time.
A study plan that works
- Read the Alberta Driver's Guide (cars and light trucks). The questions are based on it, and it is free on alberta.ca.
- Learn the road signs by shape and colour, then each sign on the Alberta road signs tab. An octagon means stop, a yellow diamond warns, orange means construction, and white rectangles are rules.
- Take a full mock test early. The free Alberta mock tests on PassDriveTest have 30 questions and the same pass mark of 25.
- Study every mistake. Read the explanation and find the rule in the Driver's Guide.
- Learn the numbers: demerit points, following distances, distances for parking near hydrants and crosswalks, speed limits in school and playground zones, and the Class 7 and GDL rules.
- Aim for 28 or more out of 30 on several different mock tests before you go.
Topics that catch people out
- Class 7 learner rules: a supervisor over 18 with a full Class 5 licence in the front passenger seat, no driving from midnight to 5 a.m., zero blood alcohol, no more passengers than seat belts, and suspension at 8 demerit points.
- School and playground zones, and passing school buses with flashing lights.
- Right of way at uncontrolled intersections, four-way stops and traffic circles.
- Emergency vehicles and tow trucks stopped with lights flashing: slow down and move over.
After you pass
After the knowledge and vision tests, you buy your Class 7 licence card at the registry agent and get a temporary licence until the card arrives in the mail. You must hold the Class 7 for at least a year and be at least 16 before the Class 5 road test.
