How to pass the Singapore Basic Theory Test (BTT)

The Basic Theory Test (BTT) is the first test for a Singapore driving licence. It is set by the Traffic Police and taken at one of the three driving centres.

What is on the BTT

  • 50 questions from the official Basic Theory of Driving handbook.
  • You need 45 correct (90%).
  • The free Singapore BTT mock tests on PassDriveTest use the same 50 questions and pass mark.

Booking

  • You must be at least 18.
  • Register at a driving centre, pass the eyesight test and book the BTT.
  • Fee: $7.20 (since 13 March 2026), rising to $8.00 from 13 March 2027.
  • You cannot book or sit the test if you have more than 12 demerit points, are under suspension or disqualification, or are under police investigation.

A study plan that works

  1. Read the Basic Theory of Driving handbook and use the Traffic Police's free practice questions (in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil).
  2. Learn the signs and road markings on the BTT road signs tab.
  3. Take full 50-question mock tests and review every wrong answer.
  4. Aim for 48 or more on several different mock tests: you can only miss 5.

After the BTT

With a BTT pass and the eyesight test, apply for a Provisional Driving Licence ($25) so you can take practical lessons. Then pass the Final Theory Test before the practical test.

Take a free BTT mock test to see where you stand.
